MOVIES IN THE 1950s

The 1950s were very significant in terms of filmmaking.  There were two factors in explaining the rise of film in American culture during this decade.  One was the advent of television.  Because television became so prominent in the American home during this time, filmmakers needed to entice viewers back to the cinema.  Therefore, they created new technologies such as Cinemascope, VistaVision, and Cinerama.  Another factor was the Cold War.  Because of the Cold War and the atomic bomb, as well as renewed interest in the supernatural and in the universe, the decade produced what it is most known for in film: science fiction.
