LANGSTON HUGHES
Description: The poem shows the treatment of the half black and half white people of America, and the reactions that the white people had towards them.
Explanation: The poem is violent, it shows the strong discrimination of the whites against anyone who just looks black.
Evaluation: It was chosen to show how far black rights has gone, and those who try to have better lives for their children by making them half white, are just torn down once again, and given no chance for renewal.
Analysis: The poem definitely shows the 1920’s as roaring and savage, no where else is the segregation more open and gruesome with no repercussions.
MULATTO
I am your son, white man!
Georgia dusk
And the turpentine woods.
One of the pillars of the temple fell.
You are my son!
Like Hell!
The moon over the turpentine woods.
The Southern night
Full of stars,
Great big yellow stars.
